Last year, my colleague Javier had the chance to take some steps in King of Meat, the new strong bet of Amazon Games in a field that is not their usual territory. The company has been in the business for about 15 years and, despite keeping a low profile, has managed to produce great titles like New World, Lost Ark, Throne and Liberty and maybe this game that brings us together today in this analysis will become a well-known name in the coming months.
King of Meat has a very different tone from the games described above, with a hack and slash structure aimed almost 100% at cooperative multiplayer. The production puts us in a kind of reality show in the mythical world of Loregok that mixes the modern with the medieval in which the final goal is to survive a series of dungeons that combine different types of enemies with a varied assortment of puzzles that change the pace of the action on screen.
Get equipped with everything you have because we’re going to a land where weapons and entertainment go hand in hand everywhere. It’s time to play or die, fame, glory, and riches await the most daring.
Technical Section
Bright colors and a not-so-simple cartoonish design are what abound in each of the strokes that accompany this production of Glowmade. Each scenario vibrates with colors, ironically, since most of the time the game takes place in a dungeon.
The designs of the avatars and NPCs are very original in their constant mix of medieval and modern themes, just look at the character on the cover who wears a full armor and a muscle suit that resembles the Chicago Bulls jersey. I can only imagine what other combinations players will come up with when the game finally hits the market in just a few days.
The music and ambient sounds are truly wonderful, particularly the commentators’ voices on TV, which make the experience much more enjoyable than it already is.
In terms of localization, my congratulations, a really great job has been done, even the names of NPCs and different locations have been localized to have an effect in our language, something not easy and that shows the care of the team that worked on this aspect. The Spanish dubbing has also been emphasized, although in this case, only the Iberian variant of our language has been lucky, while Latin American Spanish can only be selected in texts and interface.
Gameplay
The game’s core is in the central square that functions as a hub for players and includes a wide variety of shops where various aspects of the player can be customized; from purely aesthetic to some points related to gameplay, such as customizing some special abilities of the character.
In this aesthetic aspect, many clothing and weapon customization items are appreciated, in addition to the typical options to modify the player’s online profile with flags, stickers, and even avatar positions. As challenges are completed and treasures and glory are won, several more customization options will be unlocked, and, believe me, there’s something for all tastes and more.
It’s no secret that the game seeks to make a place in the market of battle royales or cooperative multiplayer. In fact, the game is designed for four players to overcome all the levels of the dungeons in the shortest time possible and discovering the most secrets, but the single-player mode still resists, although barely. The story in this mode revolves around a murder and expands over several episodes. Beyond the many tutorials (and when I say many, I mean too many) I think this was the best mode to learn to enjoy most of the combat secrets of the title and to try different button configurations that suited my needs (or my lack of skill, why not?).
The production is very simple to learn and doesn’t stray from a basic concept: defeat enemies with crossbows, shields, hammers, various objects to throw, and even bombs. As enemies are defeated in different ways, a chain effect is achieved that will make the points increase at the end of the level, since the sadistic audience that watches the reality show will have liked more or less the way the enemies of the level were destroyed.
Additionally, perhaps the aspect that caught my attention the most for its detail and originality in this context is the creative mode. Since the days of PC 386 and 486 and after playing Stunts for many hours, I was always fascinated by creating my own scenarios, with the years and the lack of time, I moved away from these tasks, but here I was trying different combinations to create the perfect dungeon. And it’s that King of Meat allows almost total freedom to generate scenarios without letting go of the player’s hand and explaining the reasoning behind each thing in detail.
The creation of dungeons not only includes the different rooms but also the decoration of each one, the traps that will cause the death of players and enemies alike, the enemies themselves, the time of day when the tour is made, and even the levers and switches that can activate or deactivate each mechanism. Despite how complex this explanation sounds, the execution and diagramming are more than friendly, at times I felt like I was assembling a set of Lego with movable parts.
Another positive aspect is that all creations can be published before being published to evaluate possible failures that make the dungeons unplayable, a key factor, since each of the user’s publications will eventually become the scenarios of other players at some point.
Duration
We are facing a title that will take a good chunk of your life when the servers are full at launch, I have no doubt about that. Just in the creative world, you can spend hours without noticing that the clock hands have moved relentlessly, and something very similar will happen when participating in the game’s coliseum.
For the price the title will have at launch (USD 29.99), we are facing a true offer in terms of price/duration.
Conclusion
Glowmade has scored a multiplayer that will give a lot to talk about for its creative combination, its incredible script, and the vast amount of customizable aspects it offers at a price that, by current industry standards, is almost ridiculous, and the constant action on screen.
Perhaps the primary achievement of King of Meat is that it can be played by a 9-year-old or someone with over 40 years and both profiles will find something enjoyable and fun, a characteristic very rare to find in current productions.
I recommend that if you’re into multiplayer games, don’t miss the chance to try this title, I’m sure you won’t regret it.
