Little has been heard in recent months about one of the most intriguing horror games in development for Xbox, a project that blends lunar exploration and retro sci-fi with a chilling focus. The community has begun to wonder if it was still in progress, and now its creators have broken their silence with an update on Steam.

The team, consisting of only three people at its core, has made it clear that development is ongoing, although they haven’t committed to a release date. After several setbacks since its original conception in 2012, the game was relaunched publicly in 2022 and has continued to grow with the support of external collaborators.

ROUTINE is Still On Track and Coming to Xbox Game Pass

In the official post, the developers confirm that they are nearing the final version of the game, but they won’t announce its release date until they are completely confident they can meet it. They have also shared a clear reflection: “We’ve learned from past mistakes, and one of them was announcing a date too soon.”

• One of the most striking points is that Mick Gordon, composer of DOOM, worked for years on the project’s sound design. Although he had to leave in July 2024 due to scheduling conflicts, his legacy will remain in the form of numerous audio resources and a clear musical direction that will now be implemented by a new sound designer.

The team describes the experience as a blend of Alien: Isolation and Deliver Us The Moon, a first-person adventure where exploration becomes survival as you are stranded in an abandoned lunar station, facing a threat that considers you a top priority danger.

Although not mentioned in this update, ROUTINE is already confirmed for Xbox Game Pass, and all signs point to it becoming one of the most atmospheric and oppressive games on the service when it finally arrives. We’ll be keeping an eye out for any news about its release, which could be finalized in the remainder of 2025.
