Game review publishing policy

Terms updated on 09/14/2017

At Generation Xbox, we work to offer our readers updated and honest reviews of all games and products compatible with Xbox on any of the brand’s available platforms (consoles, PC, and mobile). Therefore, we want to offer all visitors our perspective on the criteria for scoring and reviewing both software and hardware that passes through the hands of our website’s editorial team.

Objective of a review

For us, a review or analysis of a game should have as its main premise that the reader knows what to expect. Therefore, we believe that each text should be structured and organized into sections, so that it can always be evaluated by different blocks, and what the proposal in question offers. We divide the analysis structure into at least 5 blocks, 3 of which are scored.

Structure

  • Introduction: In this field, we generally detail the game’s history or an introduction that situates the reader in the game’s proposal. For example, the genre, if it’s a sequel or not, additional details.
  • Technical section*: We evaluate in this section all the visual and performance details of the game.
  • Gameplay*: In this section, we tell the reader how the game is in terms of gameplay and also if the gameplay proposal meets or not the expected.
  • Duration*: For us, the duration and useful life of the game are essential for the reader to evaluate whether or not to invest in it, and therefore, we detail what it offers in this field.
  • Conclusion: A brief summary and final conclusions about the game.

*Scorable section.

Things to consider

  • Subjectivities: An analysis is always largely subjective. But from Generation Xbox, we do not take into account for the notes the intangible elements or those that distort too much what the game finally offers, such as “soul”, grandiloquence of the author, the volume of the studio staff, the location of the studio or expectations based on previous deliveries if it’s a sequel.
  • Localizations: Generation Xbox does not take into account for the scores/non-localization of a game in its entirety. However, it will leave a record of it in the pros and cons sections and throughout the text. We believe that the lack of localization hinders the experience and therefore must be reported, but since it does not affect everyone equally, we want it to be left to the reader’s judgment.
  • Remastering: Generation Xbox will evaluate a remastering based on the work done on it and the quality/price ratio. We think that a game rarely changes when remastered; for example, Gears of War Ultimate Edition remains the same good game as the original, and therefore, we value what it offers with respect to the base game.
  • Notes: Generation Xbox will not modify, either upwards or downwards, the notes of a game once it is published. If it is not ready to be evaluated, the review will not be published until a reasonable time has passed. We think that modifying the scores is not honest for the reader.
