Owlcat details its The Expanse RPG and is increasingly reminiscent of Mass Effect

The upcoming RPG set in the universe of The Expanse is starting to show its cards. During the New Game Plus Showcase, Owlcat Studios shared new information about The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, making it clear that their proposal aims for an experience very close to what many players associated with Mass Effect, but with its own identity.

In addition to a brief in-engine sequence, the studio answered several of the most frequently asked questions, confirming that the game will arrive in late 2026 on Xbox Series, PC, and PS5, with a structure designed for constant decision-making and a strong emphasis on character and team development.

A Space RPG with Decisions, Companions, and Realism for Xbox Series

Owlcat estimates a playtime of around 30-40 hours, variable depending on choices and activities. Character customization will be deep, both in appearance and background, and will allow players to experiment with different configurations combining gadgets, weapons, abilities, and technologies throughout the game.

• The relationship with companions will be one of the pillars of the game. Each team member will have their own missions that expand the main story, and bonds can evolve into romance or deteriorate if the player’s decisions negatively affect the mission or the group.
• In contrast to other space RPGs, Osiris Reborn bets on greater realism in concepts such as particle weapons, interplanetary travel, radiation management, or zero-gravity spacewalks. There will also be exploration of remote regions, with planets of exotic biomes, space stations, and advanced technologies.

In terms of influences, Owlcat acknowledges clear references to Mass Effect, Persona, Final Fantasy, and the Souls series in the role-playing aspect; The Division and Gears of War in the shooting mechanics; and Uncharted or The Last of Us in the character dynamics. An ambitious combination that positions The Expanse: Osiris Reborn as one of the most anticipated RPGs for Xbox Series.
