People Can Fly recently confirmed the cancellation of two of its most advanced projects, and now it has been revealed that one of them was none other than Outriders 2. The game, which was being developed under the codename Project Gemini, was practically complete, but was scrapped for reasons that have not yet been publicly clarified.
The information, leaked by ThumbWars, comes from internal sources close to the studio, who claim that the development team found out about the cancellation at the same time as the public, after the official statement was published on LinkedIn.
Outriders 2 canceled despite being nearly finished
The sequel to Outriders had been in development for years and had the initial support of Square Enix, which had described the first game as “a franchise with great potential for the future”. With over 3.5 million players in its first month, the game’s success seemed to justify the green light for a sequel, which will now not see the light of day.
- On the other hand, the second canceled project is Project Bifrost, a new IP as a live service game that, according to internal sources, did not generate enthusiasm either inside or outside the studio. It is described as a “generic” and “lacking personality” proposal, which failed to move forward with guarantees.
Although Outriders 2 will not see the light, People Can Fly is still working on several projects: Project Echo with Krafton, Project Delta with Sony, and collaborating with Xbox Game Studios on the highly anticipated Gears of War: E-Day game.
For now, the studio has not wanted to make official comments, but more clarity is expected in the coming days. The cancellation of a project as advanced as Outriders 2 once again highlights the structural instability of the industry, even in games with established potential.
