The legacy of Bloodborne is still very much alive, with many independent studios attempting to recreate its Gothic atmosphere and ruthless combat. The latest to try is Butterfly Dream, a title developed in China that has just landed on Steam and is already making waves, although not necessarily for the right reasons.

The proposal is inspired by the famous Taoist parable of Zhuang Zhou’s Butterfly Dream and combines that idea with gameplay reminiscent of classic souls games. Costumes, dark settings, and even some enemy designs seem to be copied from FromSoftware’s work, something that has not gone unnoticed among players.

The problem arises when you take control. The combat system feels rigid, with enemies that barely react to hits, rough animations, and an interface that detracts more than it adds. Visually, the graphics are well below expectations, and the optimization is so poor that even high-end equipment experiences serious performance issues.

Despite everything, it’s worth putting things into context: this is a project created by one person with the support of six students, which explains its technical limitations. The small team claims to be working on patches to fix the most serious bugs, although it will be difficult to reverse the initial negative reception.
