The release of Mafia: The Old Country has sparked a significant debate among PC gamers: its performance with Epic quality settings is far more demanding than many expected. According to an analysis by DSOGaming, even high-end graphics cards like the RTX 4090 and RTX 5080 struggle to maintain 60 FPS at 1080p under these conditions.

In tests conducted with a high-end system (Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB DDR5, RTX 4090, and RTX 5080), the game showed that in extremely demanding scenarios, such as the villa of Don Torrisi, FPS can drop below the fluidity threshold even at low resolutions if the Epic setting is maintained.

Mafia: The Old Country PC Performance

• RTX 4090:

  • 1080p Epic: drops below 60 FPS.

  • 1440p Epic: between 42 and 51 FPS.

  • 4K Epic: between 31 and 39 FPS.

• RTX 5080:

  • 1080p Epic: average of 55 FPS (minimum 44 FPS).

  • 1440p and 4K Epic: fails to reach 60 FPS even with DLSS 4 in Quality mode, except when using Frame Generation.

Although the title is compatible with DLSS 4 with Multi-Frame Generation, the visual result leaves much to be desired compared to other recent productions, with visible artifacts and issues with elements like subtitles or vegetation. Surprisingly, the integrated TSR technology offers a more stable and crisp image than DLSS 4 itself in this game.

What’s the Best Configuration Right Now?

The most balanced recommendation for playing on PC is to lower the settings to High quality, which allows for exceeding 60 FPS in native 1440p and taking advantage of technologies like DLSS or TSR to improve the experience in higher resolutions. Although this means more pop-in elements appear on screen, the visual aspect remains notable, and performance improves substantially.

Mafia: The Old Country confirms that Unreal Engine 5 can bring even the most powerful systems to their knees, and that, in this case, finding a balance between graphical quality and fluidity is key to fully enjoying the game.
