In recent hours, rumors have circulated suggesting that Microsoft is abandoning the development of new Xbox hardware, betting exclusively on cloud gaming and leaving behind console manufacturing. However, journalist Jez Corden from Windows Central has published an extensive article debunking this information and clarifying that next-generation plans are still underway.
According to Corden, the next Xbox consoles have not been canceled, and both Microsoft and AMD continue to work on the new custom chip that will power the next generation. In fact, Xbox maintains a multi-year alliance with AMD to develop several hardware devices, including future consoles and portable devices from the Xbox Ally family.
Xbox Hardware Plans Remain Active
The journalist notes that sources who previously revealed the specifications of Xbox Series X|S, as well as the existence of the cloud prototype “Keystone” and the canceled internal Xbox portable console, have confirmed that hardware plans remain “unchanged”.
I can confirm, from very reliable sources, that Xbox does not plan to abandon hardware. At least not for now,” Corden explains. “But the fact that this rumor was so believable demonstrates the underlying problem: distrust of Microsoft’s recent decisions.
This information comes amidst a climate of confusion following the price increase of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a move that many players perceived as a breach of trust. This, combined with layoffs at Microsoft and the temporary stock shortage of consoles at some retailers, fueled speculation about a potential re-evaluation of their hardware strategy.
Corden adds that both Sarah Bond, Xbox president, and Lisa Su, AMD CEO, have publicly reaffirmed their commitment to next-generation consoles, including new first-party and partner-manufactured models.
Xbox remains committed to its own hardware, the article states, “and is already preparing for the next generation with AMD as a key partner.
What’s Really Happening
Although Windows Central dismisses the idea that Microsoft has decided to abandon consoles, the outlet warns that the lack of clear communication and constant changes in strategy are affecting the public’s perception of the brand.
With the market in the midst of transformation and a community increasingly sensitive to the company’s decisions, Corden’s message is clear: Xbox is not leaving hardware behind… but it needs to regain the trust of its fans before the rumor stops seeming impossible.
