For years, Project Mara was one of the most enigmatic projects from Xbox Game Studios. Announced as a psychological horror experience unlike anything else, the game promised to explore the human mind from a single apartment recreated with an extreme level of realism. However, it seems that this concept is no longer in active development.
This information comes from Jez Corden, who has clarified the current situation of the project and revealed what would now be the British studio’s top priority.
Project Mara is put on hold and Hellblade 3 takes center stage
According to the Windows Central journalist, Project Mara never made it past the conceptual phase. It’s not a game that was cancelled in the classical sense, but rather an experimental idea that never became a full-fledged production within Ninja Theory. The project could be revisited in the future, but as of today, there is no team working on it.
What’s really important is that the studio has already redirected its resources to a new, more ambitious project: Hellblade 3. According to Corden’s sources, this third installment would aim to take a step forward in gameplay, offering a more interactive experience than the first two, which received criticism for their limited focus on this aspect.
Ninja Theory remains a studio of modest size, so it’s logical that they would prioritize a established franchise like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, especially within the Xbox ecosystem. Although Project Mara is put on hold, everything suggests that the team wants to strengthen its position with a new Hellblade installment, expanding its scope and ambition for the future.
