The fiscal year-end for Xbox takes place today, June 30, but according to Bloomberg, the new layoffs within the Microsoft Gaming division will be officially announced next Wednesday, July 2. The information comes from Jason Schreier, a journalist specializing in the industry, who has reiterated on social media that this move was already foreshadowed in his previous article on the internal restructuring at Xbox.
This is a new wave of cuts that will affect different teams and studios within the company, although for now the number of affected employees has not been confirmed nor if it will impact any specific developer under the Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, or Activision Blizzard banner.
Xbox layoffs to be made official on July 2
As Bloomberg explained last week, these cuts are part of Microsoft’s global adjustment following recent acquisitions and add to other reorganization measures adopted since the beginning of 2024. The merger of teams, the closure of studios like Tango Gameworks, and the centralization of resources are among the reasons cited by the company in previous communications.
Xbox has not yet commented on this new round of layoffs, but the fact that it coincides with the start of the new fiscal year gives more weight to the information published by Schreier. If confirmed, it would be a new episode in a particularly tumultuous period for the internal structure of Microsoft Gaming.
