For months, it seemed like the new shooter from the legendary creator of DOOM would never see the light of day. Reports of its cancellation left the project at a standstill, and at the time, everything suggested it would be another lost development in the industry. However, Romero didn’t give up, and in his appearance at the Madrid Video Game Fair, he made it clear that the story has taken an unexpected turn.
Romero’s studio has grown, strengthened its team, and is now working under a much more defined direction. The most surprising thing is that the team openly talks about influences that few expected in a traditional FPS, which suggests they’re betting on a very different approach than usual within the genre.
John Romero’s FPS Takes Shape with a New Publisher and Inspiration
John Romero confirmed that development is moving forward thanks to a publisher that has decided to finance the project after Microsoft’s exit, a move that Romero himself described as crucial to keeping it alive. Currently, his studio has around 110 people dedicated to building the revamped version of the game, which has been reworked from top to bottom in recent months.
What caught the most attention was the direct comparison to Elden Ring. Romero stated that he aims to create an unprecedented experience that combines classic sensations with a more open and deeper design. Without details on platforms or an estimated release date, the project is advancing in silence, but the important thing is that it’s no longer lost: it’s alive, funded, and, for the first time in a long time, has a clear direction.
