Although its announcement came as a surprise during the Xbox Games Showcase in June, Final Fantasy XVI is now available on Xbox Series, and this week it has received its first official update since its console launch. The patch can be downloaded for free and focuses on improving the game’s technical experience.
Final Fantasy XVI arrived on Xbox on June 9, 2025, directly in digital format, coinciding with the Xbox presentation and the revelation that Final Fantasy VII Remake will also arrive on the platform by the end of this year. This move marked a historic change of direction for the saga on Xbox consoles, after many years of absence from its main releases.
New update available on Xbox Series with technical improvements
The new update does not include additional content, but it does include stability improvements, fixes for graphical errors, and minor adjustments to animations and missions. Although Square Enix has not yet published detailed patch notes, some users have reported smoother performance and more optimized loading times in transition areas.
In this Xbox version, the game features two graphic modes (quality and performance), very fast loading times, HDR support, and dynamic 4K resolution, taking advantage of the technical capabilities of Xbox Series. The company is also continuing to support the title after the release of The Rising Tide, its latest expansion on all platforms.
If you haven’t tried it yet, you can purchase it on the Xbox Store in digital format. It’s not included in Xbox Game Pass, but it can be played entirely offline and without a subscription for the campaign mode. Square Enix has confirmed that it will continue working on improving the Xbox version, and new adjustments are expected to arrive in future updates.
