For years, it has been repeated that the generation of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was very evenly matched, but when you get down to the technical details, the picture is quite different. In an era where marketing constantly talked about “high definition,” what really mattered was how many pixels were being drawn for each frame inside the console, not what was later scaled up to the TV.

That’s where Xbox 360 marked its territory. Throughout its commercial life, there were many more games that reached high resolutions, but in this analysis, we have focused on the 160 most important and representative titles that actually worked in 1280×720 native pixels, the standard known as real HD or H2. This is no small feat: we’re talking about the core, the most powerful catalog of the entire generation.
Xbox 360 and true native HD
Rendering at 1280×720 means that the game engine draws each scene with over 921,000 pixels per frame. For a console launched in 2005, that was a huge load, especially in titles with open worlds, advanced lighting, complex physics, or post-processing effects. Yet, Xbox 360 was able to sustain that resolution in a surprisingly large part of the big releases of the time.
In that collection of 160 games, you’ll find heavy hitters like Assassin’s Creed, Batman: Arkham City, Forza Horizon, Forza Motorsport 4, Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV, Dead Space, Mass Effect, BioShock, Borderlands, Skyrim, Burnout Paradise, Mirror’s Edge, Halo 4, or Left 4 Dead. These are not technical exceptions or minor titles: they are the games that defined a generation.
