Today and for the first time in the game’s history, Sea of Thieves will have its first live stream with the community at 4 PM Spain time (11 AM Argentina, Brazil, 9 AM Colombia, Venezuela, and 8 AM Mexico) and, according to the announcement by Rare itself, it will reveal what’s coming in the next two seasons and some more details about the future of the game. The announcement also mentions some changes that will be made to the Insiders program and a mysterious feature that has been requested for a long time and that the developers seem to have taken note of.
The timing of this live stream is crucial for both the development team and the fans of the game and Rare in general, given the events of the last few days that led to the layoff of many veterans of the studio in what was a sad wave of layoffs in Microsoft’s gaming division and of which we have already spoken so much in this editorial. In fact, Gregg Mayles, one of Rare’s most experienced designers with over 35 years in the company, announced his resignation from the company after the sad cancellation of Everwild, a project that had been in development for several years and that had a lot of potential based on what was seen in the only trailer that was shown of the title in 2020.
Rough Seas and Not Because of Pirates
Unfortunately, the Everwild debacle took with it other big names from the studio, such as Louise O’ Connor whose first project within the studio was the already legendary Conker’s Bad Fur Day for the Nintendo 64, which speaks to the time she had spent on the payroll of the studio now owned by Microsoft.
The community’s expectation today is to see how the studio (and Microsoft studios, in general) reinvent themselves to re-strengthen themselves after the moral blow received. For now, we’ll see what Rare’s plans are for the future of what is, today, its most successful franchise and we’ll have to wait for news from other studios.
