DOOM: The Dark Ages has received an update that introduces a new “Handheld” graphics setting designed for players who enjoy the title on the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. This enhancement automatically adapts the game’s visual settings to the needs of Windows-based handheld consoles, providing stable performance without sacrificing too much visual quality.
The new profile appears within the Overall Quality Slider and is situated alongside traditional options like Low, Medium, High, or Ultra Nightmare. When selected, the game intelligently adjusts texture, shadow, reflection, and lighting parameters to achieve an ideal balance between performance and energy consumption, which is crucial for handheld devices.
“Handheld” Graphics Setting in DOOM: The Dark Ages
With this preset active, DOOM: The Dark Ages automatically optimizes VRAM loading, stabilizing performance even in scenes with numerous particle effects or ray tracing. According to initial analyses, memory usage is around 6.8 GB of the 7 GB available, demonstrating that id Software has worked extensively to leverage the Ally’s GPU without overheating it.
Additionally, players can continue to customize advanced options like Path Tracing, DLSS, or Ray Traced Shadows, although the handheld mode keeps these sections disabled by default to ensure smooth gameplay. Overall, this update reinforces the game’s full compatibility with ASUS and Microsoft devices, confirming both companies’ commitment to offering a desktop-like experience in a handheld format.
