Randal Linden, one of the original programmers of the classic DOOM, has had a fantastic idea: release a version of the Super Nintendo cartridge of the shooter that can be enjoyed on the original hardware. The pre-order of the cartridge is already available along with a special edition of controllers for the console; if you’re interested in getting your hands on some of this, you have time until August 8th to buy.
Limited Run Games is behind the publication and according to the company, the title will feature enhanced graphics and will include levels that were not part of the first edition of the cartridge. The game mechanics also include some adjustments such as the ability to shoot in circles and the possibility that enemies will return to life on the highest difficulty.
A classic in every way
The controllers included in this edition, based on the Super Nintendo configuration, feature a special design but also include motors that allow them to vibrate. This opens the door for other games published by Limited Run Games to do the same. For this, the company will offer an open source support for modders and developers that will allow games to be updated to incorporate this feature.
The standard edition of DOOM includes a 12×16 poster, instruction manual and a classic cut box where the game is stored. The collector’s edition is another story and includes a unique authenticity certificate with its special envelope of which only 666 copies exist. As for prices, the standard version costs USD 99.99 and the collector’s edition goes for USD174.99, a somewhat high price but which can be quite a good deal for the most hardcore (and wealthy, of course) collectors. This new edition of DOOM is a new opportunity for Limited Run Games to turn the page on the disaster that the physical editions of the Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland and Piopow games meant, both for the classic NES that apparently caused problems in the hardware of said consoles due to defective components, apparently provided by a company in Asia.
