Obsidian has released a new update for The Outer Worlds 2, but the news isn’t particularly good for PS5 Pro users. The studio has confirmed that, temporarily, it has disabled PSSR technology, the resolution scaling developed by Sony to improve performance and image sharpness on its latest console model.
This decision directly affects the game’s visual performance, which now runs with a less advanced technique. Obsidian assures that the change is temporary, but the community has been quick to express its discontent with the quality difference between platforms, especially considering that the title maintains stable performance on Xbox Series and PC.
Why The Outer Worlds 2 has lost PSSR on PS5 Pro
The California-based studio has explained that version 1.0.4.1 replaces the PSSR system with TSR (Temporal Super Resolution), a less sophisticated technique also used by some games on PC and Xbox Series, similar to AMD’s FSR. According to Obsidian, the measure aims to fix visual issues on PS5 Pro, such as blurry grass on Paradise Island and lighting errors that appeared during gameplay with PSSR enabled.
Once these issues are resolved, the developer plans to restore full PSSR support in a later patch. Until then, PS5 Pro players will have to settle for inferior scaling, which has led to direct comparisons with the Xbox Series and PC versions, currently more stable and visually sharper.
