Clair Obscur makes history at The Game Awards 2025: Game of the Year and absolute record of awards

The RPG from Sandfall Interactive signs a historic night with nine awards and no rival in its height.

The Game Awards 2025 are now a part of gaming history, and a large part of the credit goes to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The RPG developed by French studio Sandfall Interactive not only took home the Game of the Year award, but also dominated one of the most memorable nights in the history of Geoff Keighley’s gala.

From the first announcement of awards, it was clear that Clair Obscur was in a league of its own. Its critical, artistic, and creative impact translated into a landslide of recognition that left the other nominees with little chance of repeating victory throughout the night.

Clair Obscur Breaks All Records at The Game Awards 2025

Sandfall Interactive’s title took home nine awards, setting a new historic record at The Game Awards. Until now, the record was held by The Last of Us Part II, which won seven awards in the 2020 edition. Clair Obscur not only surpassed that number, but did so without any other game winning more than one award throughout the entire gala.

The only categories where it was nominated but did not win were Best Audio Design, which went to Battlefield 6, and Player’s Voice, an award decided by the community that ended up in the hands of Wuthering Waves. The dominance was such that no other game managed to accumulate more than one award throughout the ceremony, a rare feat that reinforces the sense of a historic night.

With 13 nominations, Clair Obscur had already broken the previous record before the gala, but its final harvest of awards solidifies it as one of the most influential and celebrated titles of recent years. Sandfall Interactive thus goes from being a promising studio to a reference point, signing a debut that is already an integral part of the history of The Game Awards and modern RPGs.
