Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 has just received the most ambitious free update to date, and its impact is noticeable from the very first game. Firaxis has launched version 1.2.2 of the game this Monday, June 23, and with it comes deep changes to the core mechanics, new customization options, and content that significantly expands the scale and freedom of the player.
Available now for Xbox, PC, and other compatible platforms, this update marks a before and after in the experience of the classic 4X. With new rules for the era system, game modes without victory conditions, and more strategic variety, Civilization 7 takes a leap towards a more flexible and replayable design than ever.
Update 1.2.2 of Civilization 7: main changes and novelties
The core of this version is the complete overhaul of the Era system, which now allows you to choose any civilization when moving to a new era. This opens the door to unique combinations and a much more free progression, where each game can reinvent itself as you advance through history. It’s a structural change that multiplies tactical possibilities and allows experimenting with very varied playstyles.
Additionally, a sandbox mode is added, which is completely optional, where you can disable victory conditions, global crises, or even modify the difficulty of the rival AI individually. All of this turns Civ7 into a toolbox where the player decides the type of experience they want to have, without external pressures.
The update also includes new content that expands the depth and variety of the game:
-
24 new bonuses for city-states, which alter the balance of power on the map
-
14 new religious beliefs, to diversify the spiritual dimension of civilizations
-
A new urban specialization: Tourist Cities, focused on culture and income
-
And finally, the long-awaited Large and Enormous maps, with capacity for up to 12 civilizations in a game
Firaxis has also announced that it is already working on more features for future versions, such as the automatic exploration system, although there is no confirmed release date yet. What is clear is that Civilization 7 continues to evolve with strength, and this update brings it closer to the most complete and open version the saga has had.
