In an interview with GamesRadar, Philipp Weber, narrative director at CD Projekt RED, discussed the studio’s approach to The Witcher 4, the next game in the series that will kick off a new trilogy. According to Weber, the team is building upon the lessons learned from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and doesn’t intend to revolutionize the elements that made the original trilogy a success.
Instead, the developers are working on incorporating new ideas and features, while staying true to the philosophy that led to the creation of a game so well-received by fans.
A new beginning that won’t forget the past
Regarding the narrative component and mission structure, Weber explained that the team is employing the same lessons they learned from The Witcher 3. For example, they’re teaching new team members the rules for creating missions, and following the same philosophy that guided them in the past. One of the rules that the Polish company has followed in their recent games is not including “fetch quests“, and this will continue in The Witcher 4. This means that the adventure starring Ciri will be designed to be a new beginning, but without forgetting what allowed CD Projekt RED to reach this point.
The decision not to revolutionize the elements that made the original trilogy a success is due to the team knowing what fans want from a Witcher game. Weber assured that the team is working on doing new and innovative things, but without changing what already works. In this way, The Witcher 4 aims to be a game that satisfies fans of the series, while offering something fresh and exciting. With this new trilogy, CD Projekt RED is looking to follow the same path that led them to create games so well-received, and The Witcher 4 is just the beginning of this new adventure.
