Following its official presentation during the Xbox Showcase in June, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 continues to make headlines. This new installment will not only be a key chapter in the espionage and futuristic action saga, but it will also position itself as a spiritual and direct continuation of Black Ops 2, the legendary shooter released in 2012. And according to Activision, that connection is no coincidence: it’s aimed directly at the franchise’s most veteran fans.
During the Call of Duty Champs event, Lawrence Metten — associate director at Treyarch — shared very specific details about the studio’s vision. According to his words, Black Ops 7 will be set in 2035, a time jump that gives them more creative leeway than recent installments: “Not being tied to a specific historical period has given us a lot of freedom to design maps and weaponry with a fresh and varied vision.”
The multiplayer mode in Black Ops 7 promises to bring back beloved sensations
Metten was direct: “If you’re a fan of Black Ops 2, and especially if you enjoyed its competitive side, you’re going to have a blast with Black Ops 7.” He didn’t confirm specific maps, but hinted that certain classic scenarios might be present, and that the competitive focus will have a significant weight in the game’s overall design.
Official information also points to Black Ops 7 connecting with previous installments, including Black Ops 6, and that more details about its modes, story, and gameplay options will be shared throughout the summer.
Additionally, this week has seen a major leak about the multiplayer mode, derived from an update to Black Ops 6, in which direct references to the new title were found. Although there’s no confirmation from Activision, everything suggests that preparations for the full game announcement are already underway.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will arrive this year on Xbox Series, PC, and PlayStation 5, and will be available from day one on Xbox Game Pass.
