The Fallout saga is more alive than ever. In a recent interview, Todd Howard, director of Bethesda Game Studios, has confirmed that “hundreds of people are working on Fallout”, between the teams of Fallout 76 and “other projects“ that have not been announced yet. According to sources close to the studio, one of these productions would be a Fallout 3 Remastered, the return of the mythical post-apocalyptic RPG released in 2008.
The project would have been born with the same philosophy as the recent Oblivion Remastered, which arrived by surprise this year and was a success on consoles and PC. If confirmed, Fallout 3 Remastered would recover one of Bethesda’s most iconic titles, updated with visual improvements, optimized performance, and support for the current Xbox Series generation.
A new life for the Wasteland
- Originally released on Xbox 360, Fallout 3 marked a turning point in the saga thanks to its leap to 3D, its setting in Washington D.C., and an unprecedented level of freedom for the time. A proper remastering would allow reviving that devastated world with the visual and technical fidelity offered by the current generation, in addition to including its expansions and additional content.
The company has not made an official announcement yet, but Howard’s words confirm that Fallout is once again at the center of Bethesda’s strategy. Everything points to Fallout 3 Remastered possibly being presented in 2026, possibly before the arrival of The Elder Scrolls 6, which Howard himself has described as “a project still far away“.
Fallout consolidates as Bethesda’s priority
After Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition and the boost that the Prime Video series has given to the franchise, Bethesda wants to maintain the community’s interest with new releases and re-releases of its classics.
A re-release of Fallout 3 would not only reinforce the saga’s legacy but also serve as a perfect bridge towards the future Fallout 5, scheduled for after The Elder Scrolls 6. For now, Bethesda is keeping quiet, but everything indicates that the return to the Wasteland is closer than it seems. And this time, we would do it with 4K resolution, improved textures, and full compatibility with Xbox Series.
