The upcoming Battlefield 6 continues to make waves with less than a month to go before its release, and this time the news comes in relation to multiplayer. According to Matthew Nickerson, senior combat designer for consoles at Battlefield Studios, the game will have cross-play enabled by default from the start, although with some important nuances for those playing on Xbox and PlayStation.
The system won’t be a full cross-play like in other shooters. In Nickerson’s words during an interview with IGN, console matchmaking will prioritize Xbox and PlayStation players, and only if the server can’t fill up in a reasonable time will it look to complete the match with PC users.
A flexible matchmaking system
In Battlefield 6, console players will have a toggle switch on screen to enable or disable cross-play, without having to dig through complex menus. This is a decision that, according to the team, aims to give users more control and comfort:
“What we have on consoles is a simple toggle that’s directly in the game. Not all products that launch offer that from the start,” Nickerson explained.
This approach also aims to balance the experience. Although PC may have certain advantages in precision thanks to the use of mouse and keyboard, the default system ensures that console players compete with each other first, maintaining an active user base while also giving room for those who want to expand their scope to PC.
