The announcement of the release date of Hollow Knight: Silksong has completely revolutionized the independent game release calendar. The highly anticipated metroidvania from Team Cherry will arrive on September 4th, and its shadow is already starting to make an impact: up to four different projects have decided to move their release dates to avoid competing directly with one of the most in-demand games of the last few years.
What initially seemed like a simple calendar adjustment has turned into a clear trend. CloverPit, Faeland, Aeterna Lucis, and Demonschool have already joined the list of delayed games, acknowledging that facing Silksong in September would be a strategic mistake.
Games that have changed their release calendar due to Silksong (so far)
-
CloverPit (Panik Arcade): the roguelike was initially set to release on September 3rd, but will now arrive on September 26th, 2025. The studio admits that coinciding with Silksong would have “seriously compromised” its release.
-
Faeland (Talegames): this retro RPG inspired by Zelda II is delaying its version 1.0 indefinitely. Its developers prefer to wait for the “right moment” for the game to receive the attention it deserves.
-
Aeterna Lucis (Aeternum Game Studios): in this case, the decision has been more drastic. The game is being delayed directly to 2026, both due to the impact of Silksong’s announcement and the need to polish technical details in next-gen console versions.
-
Demonschool (Ysbryd Games): initially set to release on September 3rd, it will now launch on November 19th, 2025. The team explains that “it wouldn’t make sense to release the game just one day before Silksong, because it wouldn’t get the visibility it deserves”.
Silksong’s weight in the indie market
Ysbryd Games has been clear: “2025 has been an especially tough year for independent game releases, and Silksong is a phenomenon that’s capturing all the attention“. For them, delaying Demonschool is the only way to ensure that the title can have its own space in the market and “be seen and commented on in a meaningful way”.
With these decisions, Silksong is not only setting the agenda for millions of gamers, but also reconfiguring the plans of publishers and studios that want to avoid being eclipsed by one of the most anticipated releases of the decade.
