The controversial analyst Michael Pachter has made some bold statements, this time directly targeting Sony. In an interview with Yahoo Finance, he claimed that the Japanese company is a “terrible gaming company“, criticizing their business approach and lack of long-term vision.
According to Pachter, Sony’s major problem is that they’re still focused on the traditional console and physical game model, without investing enough in the trends that will shape the future of the industry: game streaming, artificial intelligence in game development, and the integration of TVs as gaming platforms.
Sony: Short-term advantages, long-term problems
For the analyst, this strategy may work in the present, ensuring good sales of the PlayStation 5 and immediate commercial successes. However, he believes that ignoring emerging technologies will ultimately hurt Sony in a sector that’s evolving faster than ever.
- Pachter emphasized that Microsoft is better positioned in this area thanks to its investment in cloud gaming with Xbox Cloud Gaming and AI applied to the Xbox ecosystem, while Sony risks falling behind if it doesn’t change its course.
The statements are no surprise coming from Pachter, known for making critical and often controversial comments about the industry, although they will undoubtedly reignite the debate between those who defend the classic console model and those who believe the future lies in cloud services and hybrid platforms.
