The lifespan of many games is drastically shortening, and this time it’s a title that’s been available for just half a year. The responsible studio has confirmed that the game will shut down its servers soon, after a phase with little impact and a community that failed to consolidate.

This is Steel Hunters, the free-to-play multiplayer shooter from Wargaming, known for hits like World of Tanks and World of Warships. Although the company is used to keeping its catalog alive for years, this time the bet hasn’t paid off. The game debuted on Steam in April 2025, and its closure is scheduled for October 8th.

Steel Hunters to Shut Down in October After Failing as Free-to-Play

The official announcement, published on the game’s Steam page, confirms the permanent shutdown of servers on October 8th. Until then, developers will allow players to access all mechs for free and have activated a new special game mode. It’s also planned to add the ability to create custom matches before the final shutdown.

• Steel Hunters tried to differentiate itself with a combat system based on customizable mechs and open scenarios, but it never managed to attract a sufficient user base. Its disappearance adds to a long list of F2P titles that have fallen in 2025, marking a worrying trend for the model.

Despite the shutdown, Wargaming has thanked players for their time and participation. There will be no refunds, although users who have invested money will be able to enjoy the full content until the last day.
