A rather striking situation has shaken the Xbox Store this week. A game published under the name Anti-Gravity Racing WipEout was removed just hours after its appearance. The reason? It was directly using content extracted from the classic WipEout games on PlayStation, without any kind of license.
An investigation by the media outlet Digital Foundry uncovered that it wasn’t just a matter of inspiration, but rather blatant plagiarism: the game contained emulated and slightly modified versions of WipEout and WipEout 3: Special Edition for PS1. Not only that, but it also included a video sequence copied from a fan-made trailer uploaded to YouTube. The supposed developer behind the release is LLS Games, a name that has already been linked to similar practices in the past.
The controversy over illegal clones in the Xbox Store returns
This isn’t the first time the Xbox marketplace has been affected by dubious titles. Some time ago, a similar controversy arose with War Gods: Zeus of Child, a poorly made imitation of God of War that managed to sneak into the store. The case of Anti-Gravity Racing WipEout takes it a step further, by directly reusing copyrighted materials from Sony.
The situation has reignited interest in a possible official re-release of WipEout, one of the most beloved futuristic racing sagas. As of today, there is no modern, accessible version available on current consoles, leaving a gap that some independent developers are trying to fill with proposals inspired by that visual and gameplay style.
For now, Anti-Gravity Racing WipEout has been completely removed from the store, but it once again highlights the need to strengthen publication filters and protect both players and original licenses.
