This article contains Spoilers: The conclusion of Resident Evil Requiem has sparked a massive conversation among players on social media and forums. Beyond the final battle or the revelations about the Elpis project, the game leaves several possible interpretations and some mysteries that could influence the future of the saga.
Throughout its final stretch, the story starring Leon S. Kennedy and Grace Ashcroft presents a decision that changes the outcome of the adventure. Depending on what happens in the final moments, the game offers two different endings that alter the fate of several characters.
The Two Endings of Resident Evil Requiem
- The game includes two main endings, one alternative and the other considered the canonical ending within the story.
While one of them shows a much more tragic conclusion for Leon, the other reveals the true purpose of the Elpis project and completely changes the meaning of the events that unfold within the ARK laboratory.
Alternative Ending: The Destruction of Elpis
In the first possible ending, Grace decides to destroy Elpis to prevent the project from falling into the wrong hands. To do this, she activates the ARK’s self-destruction system, the massive complex where the research was being conducted.
The decision leads to a final confrontation between Leon and Zeno, a member of the Connections organization. The battle is extremely one-sided. Zeno possesses superhuman strength and speed, while Leon is severely weakened by the Raccoon City syndrome, a disease that has been deteriorating his body for years.
During the fight, Leon tries to protect Grace while the laboratory begins to collapse. However, the battle ends with a fatal outcome for the agent. Grace manages to escape as the complex explodes, leaving a dark ending that concludes the mission.
Canonical Ending: The True Purpose of Elpis
The second ending completely changes the meaning of the story. In this version, Grace decides to release Elpis instead of destroying it, allowing the truth behind the project to be discovered.
When Zeno finds the vials containing the substance, he believes it’s a new virus created by Spencer. Convinced that he can gain more power, he injects the contents. However, what happens is just the opposite.
Elpis is Not a Virus
Grace discovers that Elpis is not a biological weapon, but a powerful antiviral agent capable of neutralizing the T-virus and other similar infections.
In other words, it’s an attempt at redemption by Spencer, a technology designed to counteract the biological weapons he himself helped create in the past. The effect on Zeno is immediate: his abilities disappear, and his body begins to deteriorate.
The True Identity of Victor Gideon

At that moment, Victor Gideon, another of the game’s antagonists, appears. During the final scene, it’s revealed that his body has been modified using the Nemesis Epsilon parasite.
An Evolved Nemesis
Gideon’s transformation turns him into a gigantic and extremely powerful creature, confirming that it’s an evolution of the Nemesis project seen in previous installments of the saga.
The final battle pits Leon against this creature. Despite his weakened physical state, the agent manages to defeat it after an extremely intense battle within the laboratory.
The Rescue of the Hound Wolf Squad
After defeating Gideon, the ARK complex begins to collapse. Leon and Grace are trapped among the rubble and believe they won’t be able to escape. But then, the Hound Wolf squad, led by Chris Redfield, arrives to rescue the survivors.
Although Chris doesn’t appear directly in the final confrontation, his team intervenes at the last moment to extract the protagonists from the laboratory before it collapses completely.
What Happens to Sherry Birkin
- After the rescue, the game shows a more peaceful moment between the characters.
Leon reunites with Sherry Birkin and gives her a dose of Elpis. This has great importance within the story, as Sherry also suffers from the effects of the Raccoon City syndrome.
The discovery of Elpis opens the door to a possible cure for the infections that have marked the history of the saga for decades.
Emily’s Fate
- One of the most surprising moments of the ending is related to Emily.
Throughout the story, Leon is forced to shoot her when she transforms into a creature. However, it’s later revealed that the shot was not fatal.
This leaves open the possibility of restoring her original state using Elpis, adding a much more hopeful tone to the game’s conclusion.
The Post-Credits Scene and the Mystery it Leaves
After the credits, a scene appears that points directly to the future of the franchise. In the destroyed laboratory, a special unit eliminates the BSAA agents investigating the site and recovers an objective before Chris Redfield’s squad arrives.
Everything indicates that some Elpis vials have been recovered by an unknown group.
The Theories Left by the Ending of Resident Evil Requiem
The game’s ending raises several important questions for the future of the saga:
-
Who really recovered the remains of Elpis?
-
Could this technology be used to create new biological weapons?
-
What role will Leon and Grace play in future events?
If one thing is clear from the conclusion of Resident Evil Requiem, it’s that the story of the Resident Evil universe still has a lot to tell.
