The return of Mass Effect won’t be immediate, and BioWare is well aware of it. As fans continue to analyze the few official hints shown so far, a prominent voice within the studio’s history has shed some light on the development pace of the next chapter in the saga, provisionally known as Mass Effect Next.
The one who spoke is Mike Darrah, former executive producer of BioWare, who in a recent intervention explained why the project is advancing with such caution. According to Darrah, the main reason is a profound change in the studio’s work approach, which has now decided to focus all its resources on a single major game, something that wasn’t always the case in the past.
BioWare prefers to take its time with Mass Effect to avoid past mistakes
For years, BioWare divided its teams between several high-budget projects at the same time, which ultimately took a toll on the creative and organizational levels. Darrah acknowledges that this structure led to internal tensions, contradictory decisions, and developments that hindered each other, as happened during the time when Anthem and the last Dragon Age coexisted.
The current scenario is very different. According to the former executive, the studio is fully committed to the new Mass Effect, without distractions or internal struggles for resources. This implies a longer development time, yes, but also greater creative coherence and a clearer vision from the beginning to the end of the project.
The wait will be longer, but the result should justify it. For a saga as important as this within the Western RPG genre, BioWare seems willing to sacrifice speed for solidity, something that many fans have been demanding for a long time. Mass Effect Next is in no hurry, and that may be its greatest virtue.
