For years, there have been rumors of various Batman projects that never saw the light of day, but in recent hours, a particularly intriguing one has surfaced. It’s a game developed by Monolith Productions that was canceled in its early stages and has now resurfaced thanks to a series of internal leaks that reveal its approach, mechanics, and even some character models.
The project, internally known as Batman Project Sabbath, should not be confused with previous attempts in the Dark Knight universe. According to the leaked material, this title took a very different approach to the Arkham saga, with a structure more focused on stealth and planning than direct combat.
This is what Monolith’s Batman looked like before its cancellation
The videos and files that have appeared (allegedly from a hard drive containing development material) give a clear idea of the direction the game was taking:
-
Clearly stealth-oriented approach, with dark areas designed for hiding and surprising enemies.
-
Sneaky eliminations, extensive use of remote gadgets, and less emphasis on hand-to-hand combat.
-
Playable Batmobile, reminiscent of what was seen in Arkham Knight, but with a more tactical approach.
-
Advanced physics system for the cape, with dynamic animations based on movement and environment.
-
Reactive music that adapts to the context, changing according to stealth, pursuit, or tension situations.
-
Highly detailed facial models, including a Jim Gordon version clearly inspired by his cinematic appearance.
-
A Batman with a more subdued design, less muscular, and a suit that resembles the one seen in the movie The Batman.
All the material corresponds to a very early version of the development and does not reflect the final state of the game, something important to keep in mind. Nevertheless, it makes it clear that Monolith was trying to move away from known formulas and explore a more methodical and atmospheric Batman.
Although this project will never be published, the leaks serve to understand the extent to which WB Games experimented with the character. Meanwhile, the official focus remains on the new Batman game being developed by Rocksteady, which still awaits concrete news.
