Xbox has taken advantage of its 2025 closing message to leave several hints about the future of its studios, and one of the names that has stood out the most is The Coalition. The team responsible for the saga has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day is, without a doubt, the most ambitious project they’ve developed to date.
The studio is facing a special year, as 2026 will mark the 20th anniversary of Gears of War, and everything suggests that this new title will be the centerpiece of that celebration. The idea is clear: to offer an experience that preserves the classic identity of the saga, but with a completely new foundation in terms of technology and gameplay.
Gears of War: E-Day has been created from scratch in Unreal Engine 5
According to The Coalition, Gears of War: E-Day has been developed entirely from scratch in Unreal Engine 5, with the goal of making it “feel like Gears, but play like something new”. The studio defines this project as a return to its roots, setting the action in the first encounters between Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago against the Locust.
The team assures that this approach makes Gears of War: E-Day the best entry point into the Gears universe, both for new players and for veterans who want to relive the origin of the conflict. The ambition is not only technical, but also in how they want to re-imagine the experience while keeping the series’ DNA intact.
For now, details are still scarce. We know that the game will arrive in 2026, something that was recently reinforced during The Game Awards, and that its official presentation was limited to the trailer shown at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. The Coalition promises to share more information throughout the next year, in what is shaping up to be one of Xbox’s most important releases for its anniversary.
