The announcement of Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic was one of the most talked-about moments at The Game Awards 2025. The return of Casey Hudson, a key figure behind KOTOR and the Mass Effect trilogy, to the Star Wars universe sparked immediate excitement among Western RPG fans. However, after the initial impact, reasonable doubts are beginning to emerge about when we can actually play it.
According to new information shared by Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg journalist and one of the most reliable voices in the industry, the project may be much greener than many imagined.
Casey Hudson’s Star Wars RPG could take many years
Schreier has pointed out that the studio responsible for the game was founded this year, a fact that completely changes the perspective. In that context, talking about a near release window seems unrealistic, to the point where the journalist himself jokes that 2030 would be an optimistic estimate, even slipping in the joke that it could end up being “a PlayStation 7 game”.
Beyond the exaggeration, the message is clear: Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic is in a very early stage of development. This explains why no gameplay scenes were shown during its presentation, and no platforms or release dates were confirmed, beyond confirming it will arrive on PC and consoles.
Everything suggests that we’re facing a long-term project, designed to mark a new era within Star Wars RPGs, but one that will require patience. The name, the single-player focus, and Hudson’s legacy invite optimism, although the calendar is against it. We’ll have to follow it calmly, because this journey through the galaxy doesn’t seem to be taking off soon.
