Followers of The Witcher (including myself) have been waiting for a long time for the return of the saga, and although CD Projekt RED is moving forward with the new project, the studio wants to temper expectations ahead of time. Their financial review for the third quarter leaves several hints about the internal roadmap, and one of them points directly to the fourth chapter of the franchise.
The company insists that they will not repeat the mistakes of the past and that development is proceeding according to a long-term plan. There will be no rush and no misleading release windows: the studio’s next big RPG is still far away.
The Witcher 4 won’t be released in 2026, but the new trilogy is on track
During the results presentation, Michał Nowakowski, one of CD Projekt RED’s CEOs, was clear about the future of the saga. The team won’t give approximate release dates, but they have clarified that 2026 is completely ruled out as a release year for The Witcher 4. The project is in full production, with no significant technical issues and following the internally set timelines.
The most striking thing is that, despite this slow pace, the studio is maintaining its strategy for the new trilogy: three complete games in a six-year interval. The intention is that the next chapters in the saga won’t have development cycles as long as those seen between The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4.
No mistakes like those of Cyberpunk 2077
- This planning implies faster releases between the fourth, fifth, and sixth games, but always with the goal of preserving the quality that characterizes the studio’s big projects. CD Projekt RED wants to avoid the scenario experienced with Cyberpunk 2077: no rushed release dates and production advancing at the right pace.
2026 will be packed with important releases, so many players appreciate that The Witcher 4 is taking the time it needs. If CD Projekt RED meets its plan, fans will have a complete trilogy in less than a decade, a scenario that was hard to imagine just a few years ago.
