I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence, but with over 70 retro-compatible games on sale for Xbox 360’s Black Friday, the most anticipated one, Red Dead Redemption, not being included, makes me think twice. When the new version of Red Dead Redemption for Xbox Series was confirmed a few days ago, we explained that to get the new version for free, you need to have the game in digital format, your physical Xbox 360 copy won’t cut it.

The game costs a whopping 30 euros on the Store, a pretty steep price for a game with so many years under its belt, no matter how good it is. The thing is, we all had our eyes on the Black Friday sales to see if Rockstar would include the game in the promotion, but no, with over 70 games currently available, the most anticipated one was left out of the year’s biggest discounts.
Requirements to update Red Dead Redemption from Xbox 360 to Xbox Series for free
- ✔ If you have Red Dead Redemption in digital format purchased on Xbox 360 → you’ll receive the free update.
- ✔ It also includes Undead Nightmare, which is part of the new edition.
- ✘ If you have the game on physical disc, even if it works on Xbox Series → no free update.
On Xbox, there was never a specific edition for Xbox One, so the only valid license is the digital one from 360. It doesn’t matter if you have the original disc or the physical GOTY edition: Microsoft can’t validate those copies to apply this modernized update.
Unless Rockstar decides to lower the game’s price between now and December, the alternatives are what they are: either pay for the digital copy or wait for a new round of sales that includes this game.
