While the new chapter of the Mafia saga has met and even exceeded 2K Games’ commercial expectations, the return of Borderlands has not had the same luck. In the words of Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, the fourth installment of the popular shooter “has performed below expectations“, indicating that initial sales have fallen short of internal estimates.
In contrast, the reception of Mafia: The Old Country has been notably positive, both in terms of criticism and economic performance. The title developed by Hangar 13, conceived as a prequel to the first game, has shown that there is still a large audience for story-driven experiences.
Mafia shines and prepares more free content
The success of Mafia: The Old Country has reinforced 2K’s position on single-player projects, with Zelnick highlighting that “players still value productions that offer a solid and well-constructed narrative experience“.
Additionally, post-launch support is far from over. In the coming months, a major free update will be released, adding the Free Ride mode, a free exploration mode that will allow players to roam the city with new secondary activities, optional missions, and additional challenges.
On the other hand, Borderlands 4 is still searching for its place after a more discreet launch than expected. Although it maintains a stable player base, growth forecasts have not been met, leaving the immediate future of the Gearbox saga under the 2K label up in the air.
