According to new leaks, Ubisoft has allegedly canceled an Assassin’s Creed project set in post-Civil War America, where the player would assume the role of a former slave turned member of the Assassin Brotherhood. The story would have pitted the protagonist directly against the Ku Klux Klan in a never-before-explored setting.
The rumor has been shared by several sources on social media, claiming that the project was scrapped following the controversy surrounding the character of Yasuke, the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. According to reports, the studio opted not to continue with a second game centered around an African American protagonist due to fear of another wave of negative reactions.
A canceled project despite the success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows
The interesting thing about this case is that, while this title was canceled, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has become one of the best-selling games of the year, even surpassing Ubisoft’s initial projections. This highlights the strong demand for experiences set in diverse historical periods and the interest of players in new perspectives within the franchise.
So far, Ubisoft has not made any official comments about the alleged cancellation or the status of the project, which was reportedly in the early stages of development at one of its North American studios.
Nevertheless, the news makes it clear that the Assassin’s Creed universe remains fertile ground for new stories… even if some, unfortunately, never see the light of day.
