While the community waits for new details on GTA 6, rumors are starting to circulate about a move that could change the way Rockstar Games manages content for its next big hit. According to several sources, the company is about to announce Project ROME, an in-house development that would expand modding possibilities in the game’s universe.
Project ROME, which corresponds to the acronym for Rockstar Online Modding Engine, would be a set of tools designed to allow players to create experiences within GTA Online. The idea is reminiscent of what Fortnite already offers with UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite), which has allowed the community to generate new modes and maps in parallel with Epic Games’ official support.
Project ROME, the future of GTA Online?
If confirmed, this engine would open the door for GTA Online to not only receive official content from Rockstar, but also community contributions, from new activities to playable variations using the game’s own assets. All of this could multiply the game’s lifespan and turn it into an even more expansive platform than it is now.
For now, Rockstar has not made an official announcement and it’s best to treat this information as a rumor. However, the mere possibility that GTA 6 will arrive with its own creation engine is generating a huge debate in forums and social media.
