The technical director of Ninja Theory, Gavin Costello, has shared details about the creation process of the Senua’s Saga Hellblade 2 port for the PS5 platform, utilizing Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. According to Costello, the integration of Unreal Engine 5 with the PS5 platform has been “excellent“, greatly facilitating the studio’s work.
One of the key tools they’ve used to ensure the game runs smoothly on the platform is an in-house system called Self Play, which can play the game from start to finish and associate profiling tools as it does so.

This has allowed the team to verify that the game can be played from start to finish and have a clear overview of the current performance from the get-go.
We also have an in-house system called Self Play, capable of playing the game from start to finish, as well as associating profiling tools as it does so. This meant that from the start, we could verify that the game was playable from start to finish and have a good overview of our current performance. It was a great position for us to start working on the platform.
The only significant challenge Ninja Theory faced was optimizing Hellblade 2 for the PS5 Pro, as the original Unreal Engine 5 had not been updated for the mid-range console. However, according to Costello, the port of Hellblade 2 to PlayStation 5 has been very successful, allowing the team to dedicate more time to working on new content and performance mode.
Ninja Theory’s experience with Unreal Engine 5 and the PS5 platform has been positive, suggesting that Epic Games’ engine is a good choice for developers looking to create games for Sony’s console.
