Last Thursday, we learned that Microsoft has decided to cancel Contraband, the open-world project developed by Avalanche Studios that was part of the big Xbox Series presentation in 2020. In that event, five highly anticipated first-party productions were showcased, but as of today, only two are still standing.
The original lineup included Fable, State of Decay 3, Contraband, Everwild, and Perfect Dark. Now we know that three of them have been canceled: Contraband, Everwild, and Perfect Dark. On the other hand, Fable and State of Decay 3 are still in development, although with very different progress.
Waiting for Fable and State Of Decay 3
While Fable seems to be on track to become one of the next big Xbox releases, State of Decay 3 is causing concern among part of the community. The title from Undead Labs has been in development for years, and its absence from the last Xbox Showcase has fueled doubts about its real status.
Apparently, according to what we know, the game is still on track and there is no risk of cancellation, but the studio will take the time it needs to bring it to a good port. This means that there is still a long way to go before it arrives on our consoles.
With the cancellation of Contraband, the ambitious lineup of 2020 has been reduced to less than half, reminding us that not all projects announced with the new generation manage to overcome the passage of time and the demands of development. It’s true that little was known about this last one, but it’s still a shame that after five years, all those projects have been completely abandoned.
