For years, many players have wondered why Wolfenstein (2009) was not available on digital platforms, despite being one of the most interesting installments in the series. Developed by Raven Software and originally published by Activision, the title disappeared from stores for over a decade due to disputes between publishers. However, it may be on the verge of returning.

Movements detected on SteamDB have raised all sorts of suspicions. The game’s package has been updated several times in recent weeks, including compatibility with Steam Deck and what appears to be an internal beta test by id Software, in addition to the involvement of Activision’s quality control team.

In August 2009, Wolfenstein arrived on PC and consoles under the Activision label, just when Bethesda and ZeniMax acquired id Software. That contractual situation prevented the game from being kept on sale digitally for a long time, and since then it has been a practically inaccessible title in a legal way.

But now, with all parties involved under the Xbox umbrella, something is cooking behind the scenes. The Steam database shows recent changes to the game’s packages, with references to a closed test, compatibility improvements, and revisions made just a few days ago.

This is added to a detail that does not go unnoticed: QuakeCon 2025 begins in just a few days, and it wouldn’t be the first time that Xbox and Bethesda take advantage of the event to launch a classic in a surprise move. It already happened with Quake Remastered in 2021, Quake II in 2023, and the improved collection of DOOM in 2024, all of them with direct arrival on Xbox Game Pass.

Although there is no official confirmation, the pattern of updates and previous releases invites us to dream. Additionally, Nightdive Studios has confirmed that it will reveal a new remastering during QuakeCon, although everything points to it not being Wolfenstein 2009, but another classic.
