There are names that were forged decades ago and have earned a place of honor since their release. Today, I’m talking about one of the most iconic games to see the light of day during the NES era of Nintendo.
I’m referring to Ninja Gaiden, which had several releases in its 2D version, leaving a mark. That’s how it returns to its roots with a new 2D installment, preserving what made the saga great, without neglecting respect for its 3D versions, which enjoy great popularity.
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound Has Arrived, and We Take Our First Steps
This sequel, in my opinion, has many notable elements when compared to the originals. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a huge difference since the last 2D game in the series was released. That’s why I bring you this basic guide, which will surely be useful to you.
Difficulty and Accessibility of the Game (Spoiler Alert)
Remember, there will be spoilers, so it’s best to be warned. That said, I can assure you that the game starts in a friendly way, and as we progress, its level of demand increases, making it challenging for beginner players.
However, you have the option to activate the assisted mode, which warns you that your experience will change if you use it. This mode allows you to adjust parameters that facilitate progress, such as:
- Reducing damage to zero and becoming invincible
- Adjusting the game speed to make it more paused
- Modifying the loading time of special attacks in your favor
All this allows you to adapt the game to your taste, in case you prefer to focus on the experience without frustrations. Still, I recommend not modifying these options unless it’s strictly necessary.
You can also customize the text style, choosing between a retro typography or a more stylized and modern one. Both options look great, and they’re details worth exploring.
Two Characters, Double the Fun
In this adventure, you’ll only have two characters: Kenji and Kumori. Most of the time, you’ll control Kenji, who fights with a sword. Kumori, on the other hand, throws kunai. Both share abilities like the simple jump, which can be enhanced if you press the attack button over an enemy in the air, activating a guillotine impulse that prolongs the time in the air. This movement can be repeated as many times as the environment allows.
Additionally, at a certain point in the game, both characters merge into one, combining their abilities. You’ll be able to alternate between sword and kunai attacks, and once a special indicator is charged, you can execute a devastating attack, especially useful against final bosses.
Weapons and Upgrades
The game doesn’t have a large arsenal, but it does have an upgrade system based on talismans, which grant active and passive abilities. These are equipped in Kenji or Kumori’s set and are divided into two categories: advantages or challenges. Some examples are:
Talismans that grant advantages:
- Completely fill your health at each checkpoint
- Increase damage when you have low health
- There are many more, it’s up to you to discover them
Talismans that add difficulty:
- When you die, you return to the beginning of the level instead of the last checkpoint
- You receive more damage from each enemy hit
- And many more hidden ones
This system allows you to personalize your experience in each game, varying the gameplay style according to the talismans you choose to equip.
Secrets, Replayability, and More Difficulty
Each level is full of secrets. There are false walls that you can break to discover hidden objects, so you’ll need to be very observant. Some passages won’t be evident at first glance, but they hide valuable rewards like skulls and beetles that will be of great help.
At the end of each level, you’ll get a score that you can improve by replaying the levels. Getting a better result will help you unlock achievements, making Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound highly replayable. There are also platforming sections that require great precision to avoid failure.
And if you thought everything was simple, after completing the campaign, the extreme difficulty is unlocked, where you’ll feel the true challenge. Only then will you know if you’re a worthy successor to Ryu Hayabusa. Everything the game offers is designed to test you and make you enjoy every minute as if it were the first.
To conclude, the return of Ninja Gaiden to 2D with Ragebound is wild and action-packed. Each experience will be unique, and that’s where the true charm of the title lies. Don’t waste time and dive into this spectacular adventure!
