Microsoft has confirmed that as of yesterday, July 18, 2025, it is no longer possible to buy or rent movies or TV shows from the Microsoft Store, either on Xbox or Windows. The Movies & TV service, which has been available for years as an alternative to watch digital content, will only remain as a playback platform for those who have made previous purchases.
The news has been made official on Microsoft’s support website, where all the details of this transition are clarified. Although there will be no new content for sale, users will still be able to access their purchased movies and series normally, both on Xbox and Windows devices. It will also be possible to play personal videos from local storage.
Farewell to purchases, but access to acquired content remains
According to the official statement, movies and TV shows already acquired will remain available in the Movies & TV app. This includes the option to stream them or download them in HD quality to enjoy without a connection, always from compatible devices.
Microsoft also reminds us that, in the case of the United States, support for the “Movies Anywhere” service is maintained, which allows linking certain purchases with other video platforms. However, outside of that territory, it is not possible to transfer purchased content to services like Prime Video or Apple TV. Additionally, Microsoft clarifies that no refunds will be offered for already acquired digital content.
