A series of posts from the well-known leaker Kepler (Kepler_L2) on social media has set off alarm bells among hardware enthusiasts. According to his messages, the next Xbox could be in development with a chip over 400 mm² manufactured in the N3P process (or even a combination of N3P+N2P), accompanied by 36 GB of GDDR7 memory, which would represent a significant technical leap compared to the current generation.
But what’s most striking isn’t just the technical muscle. Kepler speculates that if Microsoft decides to adopt an open strategy to third-party stores, this would mean selling the hardware for profit. Under this approach, the final price of the machine could easily exceed $1500, moving away from the traditional policy of selling consoles at a loss.
A chip beyond the reach of PS6 and with a name inspired by The Tempest
Kepler himself rules out that this design could belong to the supposed PlayStation 6. According to him, Mark Cerny usually opts for more conservative configurations in terms of chip size, so this SoC wouldn’t fit with Sony’s philosophy.
Additionally, he notes that the chip’s codename refers to a character from The Tempest, a work by William Shakespeare, which would be in line with the naming system that AMD uses for PlayStation products. However, he adds that this chip is “probably for the next Xbox”, suggesting that AMD might be using a different convention for this project or that Microsoft has requested a specific one.
Xbox Series premium or new concept?
This set of rumors leaves the door open to several interpretations: it could be a ultra-premium model of the future Xbox, a modular console, or even a machine aimed at a new market segment between consoles and PCs. Everything points to the fact that in the coming months, we could find out more, as several insiders and leaks point to a little later as the key to a possible revelation of the new hardware.
For now, nothing has been officially confirmed by Microsoft, but the magnitude of the specifications and the estimated price would give a radical twist to what we understand by home console.
We’ll be keeping an eye on any news.
