For years, there have been speculations about the actual commercial performance of the main titles in the Halo saga after the Bungie era. Although Microsoft did not provide specific figures for Halo 4 or Halo 5: Guardians after their release, a direct estimate has now emerged from the team that led the development.
A former lead designer at 343 Industries has shared on his LinkedIn profile that he worked from pre-production to the launch of both games, and that each of them sold around 10 million copies worldwide. This is a very significant figure, demonstrating the impact that Halo continued to have on the Xbox community during the Xbox 360 and Xbox One years. Recently, we learned that the next remake of the first Halo saga, may not include multiplayer.
Halo 4 and Halo 5 sales: over 9 million copies each
The designer in question was part of the studio between 2011 and 2016, and was in charge of the large-scale development of both projects, leading a multidisciplinary team of over 150 people. In the job description, it is detailed that the result was the delivery of “two AAA titles that sold almost 10 million units each“.
Halo 4 takes us to the mysterious world of Requiem, where the Master Chief awakens from his slumber to face a new Forerunner threat while dealing with Cortana’s degradation. In Halo 5: Guardians, the story revolves around the pursuit of a Chief considered a fugitive, pitting two Spartan squads against each other in the midst of a galactic crisis caused by an unleashed artificial intelligence.
Halo 4, released in 2012 for Xbox 360, was the first game developed by 343i after Bungie’s departure. On the other hand, Halo 5: Guardians was released in 2015 on Xbox One and heavily focused on competitive multiplayer. This data confirms that, despite criticism and changes in the saga’s approach, both games achieved very high sales figures, reinforcing their position within the franchise’s legacy.
