Electronic Arts has updated its official server closure page to add a new title to the list of games that will lose online functionality this year. This time it’s Need for Speed: Rivals, the racing game released in 2013 and still available on Xbox Series and Xbox One through backward compatibility.
After confirming that NHL 21 will shut down its online service on October 6th, EA has now set October 7, 2025 as the final date to turn off the servers for Rivals. The decision will directly affect its multiplayer, asynchronous challenges, and all integration of its shared world, one of the game’s most notable features at the time.
Closure of Need for Speed Rivals servers in October
Although Need for Speed Rivals will still be playable in offline mode, the experience loses a large part of its essence by eliminating the AllDrive system, which allowed individual police and racer sessions to connect in the same persistent world. Leaderboards, rewards linked to servers, and social challenges will also disappear.
Since its release, the game has been available on the Xbox Store and other digital platforms, but it is not guaranteed to remain on sale after the closure of its servers. As has happened with other titles, there is a possibility that EA will remove it later, something that particularly worries players who value the preservation of the digital catalog.
Cases like this are added to a growing list of games with limited or deactivated online features. Following the controversial closure of The Crew by Ubisoft, and the doubts about the future of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag with its upcoming remake, more and more users are demanding a clear solution to keep older games accessible without depending on servers that can disappear at any time.
