Preliminary data for video game sales in May 2025 in the United States shows a mixed landscape, but with a clear trend: the subscription model continues to gain momentum. According to Circana (formerly NPD), spending on digital services in the sector reached unprecedented levels during the past month.
In total, Americans invested $600 million in video game subscriptions during May, marking the highest monthly spending ever recorded. Additionally, it is the third consecutive month of growth for this segment, reflecting an increasingly strong preference for accessing digital catalogs over the traditional purchase of individual titles.
The Subscription Model Consolidates Amidst Hardware Slowdown
- Although detailed data has yet to be released, Circana director Mat Piscatella has pointed out that this surge encompasses multiple services, from console platforms to options for PC and mobile. While some users suggest that not everything is attributable to a single brand, Xbox’s role in this boost is undeniable, especially considering the visibility and reach of its proposition within the US market.
In contrast, the hardware market did not have its best month. Sales of Xbox Series consoles fell by 30% compared to May 2024, affected by the announcement of a price increase starting on May 1st. Switch saw a 44% drop in the same period, while PS5 achieved a slight 3% growth.
All signs point to economic uncertainty and pressure on household spending driving interest in options that offer more value for less money, and subscription services are capitalizing on this shift in consumer habits. Circana’s complete figures will be published in the coming hours and will provide a more precise understanding of the role each platform plays in this record.
