Although Final Fantasy IX Remake has not been officially announced by Square Enix, the project has been in the spotlight since it appeared in the famous NVIDIA GeForce Now leak. Since then, multiple voices in the industry have taken it for granted that the title exists, but the total lack of news has reactivated rumors of internal problems.
One of the latest to speak out has been NateDrake, also known as NateTheHate, a regular insider on ResetEra and on his own podcast. Following a leak related to a Vivi figure that would arrive in 2026, Nate revealed that the game is still in development “according to his latest check”, but that about a month ago he heard it was “in trouble and possibly canceled“.
The remake of Final Fantasy IX could have been canceled, but there is no official confirmation yet
According to his words, the information about the possible cancellation comes from a single source, so he still needs to verify the current situation of the project more thoroughly. He does not rule out that development may continue, although it seems clear that something is not going well in Square Enix’s internal plans. The remake of Final Fantasy IX was mentioned by Jeff Grubb and other insiders as part of the next big titles in production, along with the already released Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. However, it has never received a public presentation, trailer, or release window.
It’s not the first time Square Enix has canceled or put developments on hold. Recently, it was revealed that internal games like The First Descendant were about to be discarded before their final push. In this case, if the remake of FFIX is really in danger, it could be due to changes in the company’s strategy after its latest financial results.
For now, everything remains in the realm of speculation, but if Nate’s information is confirmed, we would be facing one of the biggest silent projects at risk of disappearing. We will be keeping an eye on any updates. Remember that on Xbox, you can play the classic game, which has been available for several years.
