Microsoft has initiated a large-scale restructuring this Wednesday, involving the layoff of approximately 9,000 employees worldwide, a figure representing around 4% of its global workforce, which consists of around 228,000 employees. The adjustment affects multiple divisions, including its gaming sector, where departures have already been registered in Xbox, Bethesda, and King.
In a statement sent to media outlets like Variety, an official Microsoft spokesperson has stated that the company is continuing to implement necessary organizational and labor changes to prepare for a dynamic and changing market, although they have not specified which areas will be most impacted in the medium term.
Microsoft reorganizes global teams in search of greater agility and focus
These layoffs come just a few months after the acquisition of Activision Blizzard and following several positive financial reports, which has generated concern both within and outside the company. According to sources close to the matter, part of the objective is to reduce intermediate management levels and focus resources on units with greater growth potential.
In the gaming sector, the impact is particularly visible in Bethesda’s London headquarters and the mobile studio King, responsible for Candy Crush, which is reported to have lost around 10% of its workforce. Additionally, employees from other branches of Microsoft are also being informed of their termination today.
From within the company, it is emphasized that those affected will receive medical assistance, economic compensation, and priority in future internal vacancies. Nevertheless, everything suggests that the restructuring is not yet complete and more departures may be confirmed in the coming days.
Microsoft remains one of the key players in the global technology sector, but this move confirms that even large multinationals are seeking to adapt quickly to an increasingly volatile economic environment, marking a new chapter in its business strategy.
