The French YouTuber and modder Millomaker managed to create, back in 2024, a portable version of the Xbox 360, after almost two years of work and a whopping investment of €8,576 in parts and components. The result is a console that measures 350 mm in length, 138 mm in width, and 38 mm in height, and weighs 1.3 kg, making it significantly smaller and lighter than the original.
Millomaker started his project by applying reverse engineering to the Xbox 360 parts, to determine which components were essential and which parts could be eliminated or modified. This allowed him to create a compact version of the console, which runs games from a 1 TB SSD and features a heat sink capable of handling the 50 W of the Xbox’s APU. The console also features a four-cell 5000 mAh battery, providing one hour of gameplay, and a custom VRM system.
If a YouTuber can do it, Microsoft should be able to mass-produce it
To save space and energy, Millomaker eliminated all unnecessary features, such as Bluetooth for wireless controllers. The console also features a stunning 8-inch IPS screen with a 1280×800 resolution, which maximizes the capabilities of the old machine. The final result is a portable console that can run Xbox 360 games, although it cannot connect to online servers due to the lack of a DVD drive.
Millomaker has documented every step of his project on his YouTube channel, sharing details about the technical obstacles he faced and the solutions he found. The project is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of modders and tech enthusiasts, showcasing what can be achieved with dedication and perseverance. Millomaker is already working on his next project, which involves transforming a Nintendo Switch into a living room console.
