After years of requests from the community, Ubisoft seems to be working quietly on the remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, one of the most iconic and beloved titles in the entire saga. Originally released in 2013, this chapter took us to the 18th-century Caribbean to live adventures as Edward Kenway, a charismatic pirate who combined stealth, boarding, and naval exploration like never before in the franchise.
The remake is being developed by Ubisoft Singapore, the same studio responsible for Skull and Bones, and aims to reimagine the original experience with current technology, new gameplay systems, and a more ambitious approach to open-world, combat, and marine life. Although it still doesn’t have an official release date, everything points to it being one of the next big projects in the saga after Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
The Black Flag remake will bet on realism, living world, and naval exploration
The new Black Flag won’t be a simple remastering. Ubisoft intends to rebuild the game from scratch, using its updated Anvil engine, to offer a modern technical aspect that meets current standards. This will include more detailed marine environments, dynamic wave and weather simulation, improved visuals for characters and port cities, and a more vivid representation of the colonial Caribbean.
- One of the strong points of the original, naval combat, will receive a thorough revision. It is expected that boarding, ship improvements, and naval battles will have a deeper and more tactical system. Additionally, stealth and melee combat will also be renewed, adapting to the changes introduced in more recent installments like Origins, Odyssey, or Valhalla, but maintaining the agile pace of the original game.
- It has also been mentioned that Ubisoft could expand the story and secondary character content, taking advantage of the historical context and setting to strengthen the connection of Black Flag with the rest of the Assassin’s Creed universe. Edward Kenway will also benefit from more elaborate characterization, with improved animations and new cinematics.
- For now, there is no official confirmation on platforms or exact date, but everything points to it being available on Xbox Series, PS5, and PC, with a possible release between 2026 and 2027. It has not been clarified whether it will be part of the Infinity ecosystem or have online features.
What is clear is that Ubisoft wants to recover the adventurous spirit of the original, with pirates, Templar secrets, hidden islands, and an unforgettable soundtrack. The community remains very active around Black Flag, and everything indicates that this remake will be a love letter to those who enjoyed it over a decade ago… and a perfect entry point for new players.
